1. What is the difference between “Mental Performance Coaching” and “Sports or Clinical Psychologist”?
-
Performance Coaching (@MentalGolfDoc): Focuses on the “Future” and “Optimization.” We work on mental skills, focus, arousal regulation, and routine to lower your scores and increase competitive resilience. It is for athletes looking to move from good to great.
-
Sports or Clinical Psychology: Mental training with additional focus on “Healing” and “Functioning.” It involves diagnosing and treating any mental health concerns (e.g., clinical depression, generalized anxiety) to move an individual from distress to wellness.
2. Dr. Hannant, you are a Licensed Psychologist. Does that mean our coaching sessions are “Therapy”?
No. While my doctoral training (Psy.D.) and clinical experience inform my expertise, @MentalGolfDoc sessions are strictly Performance Consulting. We are training your brain like a muscle to perform under pressure, not treating a medical or mental health condition.
3. Is coaching covered by my health insurance?
No. Because Performance Coaching is not “medical treatment” for a diagnosed mental health disorder, it is not billable to insurance. This allows us to focus purely on your athletic goals without the constraints of clinical diagnostic codes. You will be recommended to complete a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to ensure extensive privacy.
4. What if a clinical issue (like severe anxiety or depression) comes up during coaching?
Your well-being is my priority. If we identify a clinical need that falls outside the “Performance” scope, I will assist you in finding a licensed clinical provider in your home state to ensure you get the appropriate care. (For residents of NC, FL, and PSYPACT states, we may discuss transitioning to a clinical track under my licensed practice).
5. Can a college coach see my Mental Performance Reports?
Only with your explicit permission. We use these reports to show coaches your “Mental Maturity” and “Coachability”—two traits that are highly valued in the recruiting process. You remain in control of who sees your progress data.
6. Why do I need a “Mental Doctor” for golf?
Golf is 90% mental. You have a swing coach for your mechanics and a trainer for your body; @MentalGolfDoc is the “Coach for your Mind.” We ensure that when you step on the 1st tee, your brain is your greatest asset, not your biggest opponent.
